Ingredients

Units:

Main

  • 1 ยฝ kg pork ribs (spare or baby back), membrane removed from back

Can be cut into individual ribs or left as full racks

  • 355 ml Dr Pepper (or similar cola-based soft drink)

Use a full 355ml can or similar quantity

Seasoning

  • 5 g salt

    To taste

  • 3 g black pepper, freshly ground

    To taste

  • 5 g garlic powder
    (optional)
  • 5 g paprika(optional)

Method

  1. 1

Remove the thin membrane from the back of the ribs by sliding a knife underneath and peeling it away. Pat the ribs dry with kitchen paper.

    ~5 mins

Tip: Removing the membrane helps the flavours penetrate the meat and improves texture

  2. 2

Season the ribs generously on both sides with salt, black pepper, and any additional spices such as garlic powder or paprika.

    ~5 mins

Tip: Season whilst the slow cooker heats for better flavour development

  3. 3

For enhanced colour and flavour, briefly sear the ribs in a hot pan or under a preheated grill for 2โ€“3 minutes per side until lightly browned. This step is optional but recommended.

    ~10 mins
    Optional step

Tip: Browning develops a deeper flavour and better colour; skip if time is very limited

  4. 4

Place the ribs into your slow cooker, arranging them so they fit comfortably but are not crushed.

    ~5 mins

Tip: If your ribs are very large, you may need to cut them in half to fit

  5. 5

Pour the Dr Pepper over the ribs, ensuring they are covered or at least well coated with the liquid.

    ~3 mins

Tip: The Dr Pepper will create a sweet and savoury glaze as the ribs cook

  6. 6

Cover and cook on Low for 8 hours, or on High for approximately 5 hours. The ribs are done when the meat pulls away from the bone easily with a fork and is tender throughout.

    ~8 hrs

Tip: Do not lift the lid unnecessarily during cooking, as this extends the cooking time

  7. 7

Once cooked, carefully remove the ribs from the slow cooker using tongs or a slotted spoon.

    ~5 mins

Tip: The ribs will be very tender and may break apart, so handle gently

  8. 8

If desired, brush the ribs with additional sauce or the cooking liquid from the slow cooker for extra flavour and shine.

    ~5 mins
    Optional step

Tip: Optional finishing step for extra glaze and presentation

  9. 9

Serve the ribs hot on a bed of steamed rice, with vegetables, or with your favourite sides.

    ~5 mins

Tip: Serve immediately whilst the ribs are warm and tender
