Units:

Main

  • 2 racks pork ribs (spare ribs or baby back), trimmed of excess fat

    Approximately 1.5–2 kg total

Seasoning & Sauce

  • 500 ml barbecue sauce

    Store-bought or homemade

    To taste

  • 1 tsp black pepper

  • 1 tsp smoked paprika or garlic powder
    (optional)

Method

  1. 1

Remove the membrane from the back of the ribs by sliding a knife underneath and peeling it away.

    ~5 mins
  2. 2

Pat the ribs dry with kitchen paper and season both sides generously with salt, black pepper, and any additional spices you're using.

    ~5 mins
  3. 3

Optional: Quickly sear the ribs in a hot frying pan for 2–3 minutes per side to develop colour and flavour, then transfer to the slow cooker.

    ~5 mins
    Optional step

Tip: This step enhances flavour but can be skipped for convenience

  4. 4

Place the ribs into the slow cooker, standing them upright if possible or coiling them to fit.

    ~2 mins
  5. 5

Pour the barbecue sauce evenly over the ribs, ensuring they are well coated.

    ~3 mins
  6. 6

Cover the slow cooker and cook on Low for 8 hours or High for 5 hours, until the ribs are extremely tender and the meat pulls easily from the bone.

Tip: Do not stir during cooking

  7. 7

Remove the ribs carefully and transfer to a serving platter. Spoon extra sauce from the slow cooker over the top.

    ~5 mins
