Original method: 45 minutes
Ingredients
Main
- 1500 g pork ribs (baby back or spare ribs), trimmed
Approximately 2 racks
- 400 ml BBQ sauce
Use your favourite brand or homemade
Seasoning
- 2 tsp salt
- 1 tsp black pepper, freshly ground
- 1 tsp paprika(optional)
For extra flavour and colour
Finishing
- 200 ml BBQ sauce(optional)
Add in final 30 minutes for caramelised finish
Additional sauce for serving and final glaze
Method
- 1
Remove the membrane from the back of the ribs by sliding a knife under it and peeling it away. Pat the ribs dry with kitchen paper.
~5 minsTip: This helps the seasoning penetrate and improves texture.
- 2
Season both sides of the ribs generously with salt, black pepper, and paprika (if using).
~3 minsTip: Season evenly for consistent flavour throughout.
- 3Optional step
If desired, quickly brown the ribs in a hot frying pan for 1-2 minutes per side to develop colour and depth of flavour, though this step is optional.
~5 minsTip: Browning adds extra flavour but is not essential for slow cooker cooking.
- 4
Cut the ribs into smaller sections if needed to fit your slow cooker. Place them into the slow cooker crock.
~5 minsTip: Arrange meat side down if possible.
- 5
Pour the 400 ml of BBQ sauce over the ribs, ensuring they are well coated.
~3 minsTip: Do not add additional liquid; the ribs will release moisture during cooking.
- 6
Cover and cook on Low for 8 hours or on High for 5 hours, until the ribs are tender and the meat is pulling away from the bones.
~8 hrsTip: Low and slow produces the most tender results. Ribs are ready when a fork easily pulls the meat from the bone.
- 7Optional step
In the final 30 minutes of cooking, if desired, remove the ribs, brush with additional BBQ sauce, and return to the slow cooker for a glossy finish.
~30 minsTip: This step creates a more caramelised, restaurant-quality appearance.
- 8
Transfer the ribs to a serving platter. Skim any excess fat from the cooking liquid if preferred, and drizzle the ribs with the remaining sauce.
~5 minsTip: Serve immediately whilst hot for best results.
