  • 100 ml (3.3 fl oz) red wine
  • 4 lamb shanks
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 2 sticks of celery, diced
  • 2 mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons tomato puree
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 carrot, sliced
  • 1 tablespoon dark brown sugar
  • 1 beef stock cube
  • 150 ml (5 fl oz) hot water
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 tablespoon cornflour


  1. Dissolve the beef stock cube in 150 ml (5 fl oz) of hot water. Set aside.
  2. Brown the lambs in a frying pan with olive oil.
  3. Place the bay leaf and all the vegetables at the bottom of slow cooker.
  4. Pour in the wine and tomato puree.
  5. Add the stock and combine.
  6. Cover and cook for 8 hours on low.
  7. Take the lamb shanks off the slow cooker.
  8. Transfer into a serving dish and place in warm oven.
  9. Transfer the liquid from the slow cooker into a small pan.
  10. Add the cornflour and stir.
  11. Stir thoroughly until sauce thickens.
  12. Serve the lamb shanks with sauce on top.
